A mole check takes minutes, and peace of mind is priceless. The vast majority of moles are benign and stay that way for life. The key is knowing what a normal mole looks like for you, and recognising when a mole has changed and needs to be checked.
The ABCDE of moles
Dermatologists use a simple checklist, the ABCDE rule, to spot a mole that should be checked. Look out for:
- A is for Asymmetry, one half of the mole does not match the other
- B is for Border, edges that are irregular, ragged or blurred
- C is for Colour, more than one colour, or uneven shades of brown, black, red or white
- D is for Diameter, larger than 6mm, about the size of a pencil end
- E is for Evolving, any change in size, shape, colour, or a mole that itches, bleeds or crusts
When to get a mole checked
Book a mole check if you notice any of the following:
- A new mole that appears in adulthood
- A mole that is changing in size, shape or colour
- A mole that itches, bleeds, weeps or will not heal
- A mole that looks different from your others
- Any spot or mark that simply worries you
If in doubt, get it checked. It is always better to have a harmless mole examined than to leave a changing one.
Mole checks in Westbourne
At Southdowns Skin Health in Westbourne, West Sussex, mole assessment is doctor led, and where appropriate we use dermoscopy, a magnified examination of the skin, to look closely at a mole. If a mole is benign and you would like it removed for comfort or cosmetic reasons, we can discuss safe mole removal. If a mole looks at all suspicious or atypical, we never remove it cosmetically. We refer you on promptly to the appropriate specialist.
